| How to Snorkel....tips for
everyone! |
- This fun sport requires only three pieces of equipment:
a mask, snorkel, and fins.

- To check if the mask fits properly, meaning without
water leakage, which can be a nuisance and hamper the view,
just hold it over your face and nose and breathe in deep.
Doing so should create a total vacuum, keeping the mask in
place without having to use the head strap. Be sure all hair
is kept back, since even a strand can break the seal.
- Snorkels are basically all the same, and fins are sized
just like shoes. Try the fins on, they should fit snugly,
but not too tight. If they slide easily up and down on your
heels, they will do the same in the water only more so.
- Prevent your mask from fogging over by distributing some
saliva on the inside of the glass; rinse it out and it's
ready. Pass the snorkel through the rubber ring on the
strap, this secures it in place. If you've inadvertently
been issued gear without a ring, don't worry; just slip the
snorkel under the strap, next to your head. The strap will
keep it in an upright position.

- Put the snorkel in your mouth, breathe normally and
start swimming.
- If water gets in the snorkel, simply blow it out with a
burst of air. This is precisely the technique used to clear
the snorkel after diving below the surface. As you grow
adept at snorkeling, you'll get a closer look at interesting
coral formations or unusual fish. Practice this clearing
technique in the pool to get comfortable with it before you
get in the ocean.
- Do look up occasionally to orient yourself and avoid
obstacles. Avoid touching or scraping against anything; this
could damage coral growth, or since some coral and fish
sting, you could hurt yourself. Stay away from strong
currents and always swim with a buddy.
